‘Hanging up their boots’ - Long term sequelae of playing professional football

Dr Steve McNally Manchester United Football Club Head of Football Medicine and Science and Professor Michael Callaghan, Head of Physical Therapies, are pleased to confirm that the Third Manchester United Sports Medicine Conference will take place on Friday 15th November 2019 at Old Trafford, Manchester. The day is open to medical, scientific and healthcare professionals working across all sports.
The theme of this year's conference is the long term sequelae of playing professional football. We are focusing on musculoskeletal problems including arthritis, cardiac issues, psychological problems, and encephalopathy.

The world-renowned Manchester United stadium is a venue that has inspired legends and is the perfect stage for the 3rd Sports Medicine Conference.
The conference will take place in the Evolution Suite with views of the hallowed Old Trafford turf.
GETTING HERE
FROM THE NORTH
Leave the M60 at Junction 12 M602 (Salford / Manchester). At the end of the M602 (Junction 3) follow signs for Salford Quays & Trafford Park. At the roundabout turn right onto Trafford Road (A5063). At the bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal, keep in the right hand lane, turn right and follow the road round to Trafford Wharf Road, then left at the traffic lights onto Waters Reach. Continue through the traffic lights onto Sir Matt Busby Way.
FROM THE SOUTH
Leave the M6 at Junction 19 and take the A556 in the direction of Manchester Airport. Continue onto the M56 to Manchester, passing the Airport, and follow the signs to the M60 (Leeds/Liverpool). Leave the M60 at Junction 7 (A56 Chester Road) and follow the signs for Manchester United onto Sir Matt Busby Way.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
The Metrolink service operates a frequent service from the City Centre (including Victoria & Piccadilly Stations) to Old Trafford station which is situated within a five minute walk of the football ground. Metrolink enquiries Tel: 0161 205 2000
North Western Trains operate a service from City Centre Stations direct to Old Trafford Stadium where the station is located alongside the South Stand. Due to the varied kick off times it is advisable to telephone National Rail Enquiries on: 0845 748 4950 for train times.

Dr. Allen Sills
Chief Medical Officer for the National Football League (NFL). Professor of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation Vanderbilt University USA
Allen Sills, MD, FACS, FAANS is a neurosurgeon and the first ever Chief Medical Officer for the National Football League (NFL). He is also Professor of Neurological Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville, Tennessee and is a founder of the Vanderbilt Sports Concussion Centre. Dr. Sills has previously served as a neurological consultant to the NFL, the NCAA, the International Equestrian Foundation (FEI) and is a member of the Concussion In Sport Group which publishes the worldwide standards for concussion care. He has served as consulting neurosurgeon to many college and professional sports teams including those in the NFL, NBA, NHL, professional baseball, and international Olympic competitions.
Dr. Sills is a fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American College of Surgeons and is extensively involved in concussion education outreach events throughout the US and abroad. He also remains active as a surgeon and consultant for athletic teams at the youth, high school, and college level, and has served as a youth sports coach for over 25 years.
PROFESSOR PHILIP CONAGHAN
PROFESSOR OF MUSCULOSKELETAL MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS; DIRECTOR, LEEDS INSTITUTE OF RHEUMATIC AND MUSCULOSKELETAL MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS AND HONORARY CONSULTANT RHEUMATOLOGIST, LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS TRUST.
Professor Philip Conaghan is Professor of Musculoskeletal Medicine & Director of the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Leeds. He is a Rheumatologist and Deputy Director of the UK National Institute for Health Research Leeds and Biomedical Research Centre for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. His research spans early translational studies through large late-phase clinical trials, with major interests in understanding pathogenesis and therapeutic response for common arthritides, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, with a special focus on imaging biomarkers. He is co-editor of the most recent Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology and has authored over 450 publications as original research, reviews and book chapters.
Dr. Guido Pieles
Consultant Paediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiologist, English FA Expert Group Sports Cardiologist, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Congenital Cardiology/ Bristol Heart Institute and University of Bristol, Honorary University Fellow in Paediatric Exercise Science/ University of Exeter.
Dr. Guido Pieles is a childrens’ and adult sports cardiologist with expertise in inherited cardiac conditions, advanced imaging and sports and exercise cardiology. After obtaining his medical degree at the University of Marburg/ Germany and a PhD at Oxford University he trained in childrens’ and adult congenital cardiology at the Bristol Heart Institute and the Hospital for Sick Children Toronto. He is part of the FA sports cardiology expert group and consulting cardiologist at Manchester United FC. His research centres on the development of innovative methods to monitor cardiac performance in elite athletes and young people with inherited heart disease.
Dr. Martin Littlewood
Reader in Performance Psychology & Head of the Football Exchange
Martin Littlewood gained his PhD in 2005 and is currently an Associate Professor at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the UK and Head of the Football Exchange within the School of Sport & Exercise Sciences at LJMU. His research interests include identity, critical moments and organisational culture and more specifically, how the talent development environment influences and shapes the psychological well-being of the individual. He has published within this area and continues to supervise doctoral students within his role at LJMU. He has been a BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist (Psychology Support) since 2005 and has worked extensively supporting players, staff and teams in the English Premier League at both Academy and 1st Team levels at Bolton Wanderers FC, Everton FC and Leicester City FC. Martin was also a former apprentice footballer at Leeds United FC from 1992-1994 prior to progressing into higher education.
Dr. Willie Stewart
Consultant Neuropathologist at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. Honorary Clinical Associate Professor.
Dr Stewart is Consultant Neuropathologist at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow and holds Honorary Associate Professor status at the University of Glasgow and the University of Pennsylvania. He leads an internationally regarded research laboratory engaged in multiple programs investigating the pathologies of acute and long-term survival from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Working with the unique and comprehensive Glasgow TBI Archive, Dr Stewart’s research describes the complex neuropathology of brain injury across a range of exposures and survivals, with particular reference to the link between TBI and neurodegenerative disease. Dr Stewart also directs the FIELD study, which aims to describe lifelong health and dementia risk in former soccer players.

Dr Sills will talk about the experiences of the NFL in the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of brain injury from playing football in the NFL. He will talk of the lessons learnt over recent years and the improvements in concussion care in for NFL players.
Cardiac problems in the mature footballer
Dr Guido Pieles PhD, MD
Dr Pieles will lecture on the cardiac changes and potential cardiac problems that are encountered in the mature footballer, how these changes may manifest and what clinicians looking after these players must look for.

Dr. Littlewood will talk to us about the psychological well-being of players within the context of their careers that influences retirement.

Professor Conaghan will help us assess the relationship between sport and osteoarthritis and specifically to determine whether previous participation in elite level sport, intensity or previous injury, is associated with osteoarthritis.
How retirement affected me
Mr. Michael Carrick (In person or pre-recorded presentation) (with Dr Steve McNally)
Michael Carrick played 464 games for Manchester United and was awarded 34 England caps. He won 12 major trophies during his career at Old Trafford, including 5 Premier League titles and a Champions League. He succeeded Wayne Rooney as Club captain in 2017. Michael has openly discussed his cardiac and psychological issues whilst at the Club. He has kindly agreed to talk to us today in order to bring together some of the medical issues of the conference and illustrate how they affected one of Manchester United’s most experienced and decorated players.
