‘The system has to be fixed’
Roger Gillispie was incarcerated after he was falsely accused of being a sexual predator
It was late August 1988 when a pair of twin sisters, 22, left a shopping centre in Dayton, Ohio, and headed for their car. As they opened the doors, a man wearing sunglasses approached and identified himself as a security guard called Roger. He demanded to inspect their purses before brandishing a chrome gun and ordering them to drive to a wood. There, he exposed himself, fondled the young women, and forced them to perform oral sex.
When the media reported the shocking incident, a 28-year-old woman, identified only as SC, came forward. She had been shopping in the Ohio township of Miami earlier that month and had been subjected to the same ordeal by a man who also gave his name as Roger and carried a gun. All the women gave the same description of their assailant as being 6 feet or taller and weighing between 14-15st. They also said he had been wearing a distinctive gold medallion and had asked them to light a cigarette. The police now had a repeat sexual offender on their hands and the hunt for the culprit began. For two years, officers came up with nothing until they got a response to the police sketch of their mysterious suspect. Richard Wolfe was chief of security at a General Motors plant, and he believed his former colleague Roger Gillispie – who he had just fired after a “nasty fight” –was the person in the image. He then provided officers with a photograph of Roger, who was 24. Roger was arrested in 1990, charged with rape, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and gross sexual imposition. The following year, he was convicted and sentenced to a maximum
of 56 years in prison.
From the moment Roger was incarcerated, he protested his innocence, but his pleas were ignored for almost 20 years, and several petitions to appeal were rejected. The Ohio Innocence Project, however, did believe him and in 2011, they helped him have his convictions thrown out and he was released on bond. In 2012, he was granted a new trial and three years later, in a court of law, it was confirmed he had been erroneously convicted and all charges against him were dismissed. There was little joy at the verdict after spending two decades in prison – so how did he get there?
SOLVED BY… A Mother’s Love
Police were convinced Mike Williams died accidentally, but his mum knew different
Mike and Denise Williams were high-school sweethearts. They married in 1994, had a daughter, and lived in a good neighbourhood in Tallahassee, Florida. Mike was close to his mother Cheryl, who doted on him and his family. On 16 December 2000, the couple were celebrating their wedding anniversary and were looking forward to doing something special after he’d arrived back from duck hunting on the nearby Lake Seminole. Mike had left at dawn, towing his boat behind his truck, but he failed to arrive back that afternoon. Denise then rang Brian Winchester, saying Mike had not come home. Brian was Mike’s best friend and was married to Kathy, Denise’s best friend. The foursome was inseparable. Brian and Denise’s father made their way to the lake, where they found Mike’s truck, but there was no sign of him. The police were called, and Mike’s abandoned boat was later found out on the water.
After five days of searching, investigators, friends, and family, including Denise, had to face the fact that he was likely deceased. But if he’d drowned, where was his body? Was he snagged under water or eaten by alligators? No one had the answers until June 2001, when Mike’s waders were found in the water. To the surprise of investigators, there were no bite marks, so the alligator theory lost credibility – especially when it was pointed out that the creatures don’t feed during winter.
In time, Denise filed for Mike to be declared dead, so she could claim his $1.5million life insurance money – a deal brokered through Brian’s insurance company – to support her daughter. It was granted and his death listed as accidental drowning. But Mike’s mother Cheryl did not accept this. Nothing made sense to her – from the pristine waders and lack of a body, to the fact that the boat’s engine had been turned off. She knew something was wrong, so she called the police daily, campaigned on the streets with placards of her son’s face, and gave endless media interviews – something Denise had shied away from.
Then, in 2005, Brian and his wife Kathy divorced, and Denise and Brian announced they were a couple. Brian moved into Denise and Mike’s home and the pair soon married. Rumours that they must have been involved before Mike went missing exploded – and many, Cheryl included, suspected they knew exactly what had happened to her missing son. The investigation may have gone cold, but Cheryl kept her son’s story in the public eye, appealing for help and sharing her suspicions of foul play. She said, “I know some people are tired of hearing about Mike, but he’s my son and as long as I live, people are going to hear about him.” Cheryl put up billboards, took out ads in local newspapers appealing for information and wrote thousands of letters to the governor of Florida, all of which went unopened and unanswered.
